Three keys

On values, a North Star, and the things you irrationally want to keep doing yourself. I gave this speech in a dream, in front of a painting with a key. When I woke up I did not want to lose it, so I dictated it right away. It stands here as it was, only freed from transcription mistakes. It went to a young audience and to large-scale entrepreneurs at the same time. To a generation that AI will affect so much that they long for humanity. Each of the three keys helps to perceive the humanity in yourself and in others more deeply. And to feel deeply meaningful and useful in a world that is more and more shaped by AI.

A key for a girl.

I think most people would do better in life, and with AI, if they first got three keys.

Actually, I just like the symbol of a key.

I once gave one to a little 13-year-old girl, after a week where we worked on the question of why she deserved the keys to AGI.

She presented her argument. Her world.

Because back then, it was not just about the three keys that we are going to talk about now. You really had to present an entire vision for the world that you would build with the power of AGI. And we will come back to that.

But our current AI tools are so fucking good. They are really getting close to AGI. At least a digital AGI. And I think you would now do yourself a huge favor, and do the world a huge favor, if you cared first about the three keys.

Your values.

Number one. And I will make it more practical later on, but number one is simply your values.

The moment you get the really good AI tools, you will be able to do things that are absolutely amazing and absolutely horrible.

And sometimes you will be offered quite large sums of money and power, or seeming power, to do things that your values slightly disagree with, or that your values very clearly disagree with.

But you have not really defined your values, your boundaries, your no-gos. And I feel like, because AI is so powerful, you now need to do that.

Actually define them. Actually be strict about them. You need to be ruthless and clear in your values.

Because, of course, AI has its biases from what it was trained on, so it will shape your values if they are not solid. And a lot of other people around you have their values, and they will try to use AI to shape your values. And they will try to use money to shape your values. And they will try to use whatever is in their power to make their values your values.

So you gotta figure out your values first before you use the most powerful tool that we have. You really do. It is so fucking powerful.

And with power comes great responsibility. And there comes more than responsibility. You can only have the ability to respond if you are really clear about what your values are, if you have figured out a lot of the gray zones for yourself, how you would decide, and if you have something that gives you clarity.

And that brings us to key number two.

A North Star.

You need more than a goal. You need a North Star.

A goal you can give AI, and it will just do it. Most goals, the goal to build an app, write a book, it can just do it.

A North Star is basically like a goal, but so huge that you can not really imagine you will be able to do it in your lifetime.

And even if you get help from a lot of people, it is still huge. That is a North Star.

Because, A, you will never get to the point of: What now? I achieved my North Star. And if you do, you are already really far. But I hope that you will be at a point where you can always work on your North Star.

Like, for me, it is revolutionizing education. Lifting and changing the minds and behaviors of everyone, and providing an education system, an education center, a type of education for everyone that is world-class and really consistent and up-to-date, and considers how we work and learn and grow.

And for Elon, it is moving to Mars. Making humanity an interplanetary species.

So you need a North Star. It will not just guide you and help you make decisions when there is so much possibility around you. Because AI gives you almost unlimited possibility. And you will lose yourself. You will do something there, something over there. You will have a hundred projects. You will be involved in every company because every company needs you.

And I partly fell into that trap, even with a North Star. So you need to have your North Star and be ruthless with sorting things out.

And maybe even reverse-engineer your North Star. What is your master plan to get to that North Star? What happened just before you reached the North Star? What happened before that? What happened before that? And so on.

So it will not just help you have clarity when working with AI. It will be big enough that you still need humans around you to build it. Even if they are all working with AI, it is so big that you need them. And then you actually have a sensible reason to use AI tools that are so close to AGI. Otherwise, you would not need it.

And third, you will connect with humans around you because you always need them for your North Star. You will connect with the highest of human potential, but only if you have that type of North Star. And you will lead people. And I am sure there are other people sharing your North Star.

And it is kind of like, I should focus way more on showing people why my North Star makes sense and bringing people along on that journey. And the same you should do with your North Star.

So maybe, how about the biggest North Star of them all is revolutionizing education? Because all of the problems that we have, that we can solve, are the ones that stem from human thinking and human behavior. And the biggest system that we have and will have is some form of education system. And we can rethink that from the ground up, from first principles.

And that is, in my opinion, the most powerful North Star. Because from there, with a world educated deeply and on the highest level, making humanity an interplanetary species is just a little jump.

Okay, but you see? That is how you communicate your North Star. You do not have to take this one. But you gotta have one to use AI really fully, and to still connect with humans and humanity and the highest potential in all of us fully.

What you irrationally want to keep doing yourself.

And finally, you have got your values. You have got your North Star. You need to decide what you irrationally just want to keep doing yourself.

That one sounds like the dumbest one of them all. But some things you think you are doing for money or for status, but you really are not. You just want to do them.

And I do not think AI is made to take away the things that bring us joy.

People are complaining AI is taking away from artists. At the end of the day, as an artist, still create the way you want to create. Paint the way you want to paint. Make movies the way you want to make movies. And maybe even document all of that and show off and say that, yeah, it may be irrational, and you do it anyway.

And humans love irrational humans.

And if it does not get bought, as long as you still have a bigger North Star and your values are clear, you can use every resource around you to still make it work. This does not have to be your breadwinning thing. You can use AI to have a breadwinning thing.

Like, maybe that is the one job that everyone can do if you want to have something that is rational and amazing. Every company needs some person who builds the AI agent team and is the human they talk to. Someone who basically builds, connects, and makes sure your AI agent coworkers get onboarded, communicate well with each other, communicate well with the other people in the company, and do great work.

And that is what we do with YMAD. You Manage the Agentic Department. It is the one thing that every company needs and that every human will be able to do. And at some point, a lot of companies will only have different people running their agentic departments underneath them, working together to create the highest leverage of output. It is just the type of world that we are moving into, with AI becoming more and more like AGI, and us still having laws and rules and trust based on people.

Of course companies will one day work without that one person orchestrating them. But then money will not be the problem anymore.

So, in my opinion: Do your art. Follow your North Star fully. Like me with the schools and YMAD. I only do YMAD for companies that help humans grow, companies that align with my core values, because I believe in my North Star. So even there, I follow my North Star and my values.

But my purest form, my art, my irrationally long thinking, deep, mission-driven, maximally aligned with my North Star mission, is the education. The school I am building. The software I am building for that school. The processes I developed. The values I developed. The pedagogical concepts I developed for that school. The Saturdays and Mondays and days I spend fully only with teenagers, helping them grow and do projects and experience the ideal type of education as I rethought it from first principles.

That is where you fully live your art and your North Star. And if you need something to sponsor it, manage AI agentic teams for companies that align with your values the closest.

Imagine.

And maybe this is the most practical exercise you can do with all of this.

Imagine your North Star fully implemented. Imagine a world where that North Star is completely true. Really imagine it. Imagine all the people there truly following your values. Imagine what the world looks like because your North Star has actually happened. And then imagine people still doing what they love, even though they do not have to.

They do not have to do it for money. They do not have to do it because it is efficient. They do not have to do it because somebody needs the output. They just do it because they love doing it.

That is basically what the 13-year-old girl did. She presented the world she would build if she had the keys to AGI. And then everyone thought about everyone's vision and tried to figure out: Is that actually a good world? Is that a world I would want to live in? And that is how we gave away the key.

And I think it is a really good exercise. Because then suddenly your values are not abstract anymore. Your North Star is not abstract anymore. And the things you irrationally want to keep doing yourself are not abstract anymore. You can actually see the world they create.

Crazy, no?

The three core keys

Be so freaking clear on your values. Do not break them. Figure out how you will not break them in hard times, or in times where they are tested. Imagine them being tested.

Your North Star. The thing that is bigger than you, bigger than your life, bigger than anything, and inspires the heck out of you and everyone around you.

The things you irrationally want to keep doing yourself.

The first one will bring you to yourself. The second one will bring you to potential. And the third one will bring you to joy. Because you will do stuff that is irrational, but joyful to you.
