Is belonging something you have to earn?
A stage system can grant responsibility in steps. Belonging, attention, breaks and a voice are different. They apply from day one, or the bottom stage turns into a hidden requirement. At Paideia, the maturity stage system is a qualitative orientation for self-leadership and responsibility, not a performance ranking and not a global judgment of a child. Lose that distinction and a good tool turns into a bad one: the maturity ladder becomes a hidden grading scale. Children who are academically strong collect freedoms. Children who read more slowly, but are reliable and considerate, stay at the bottom. A stage describes observed self-leadership, reliability, the handling of responsibility and consideration. It rewards neither obedience nor academic performance. This distinction comes from the self-determination theory of Deci and Ryan. It describes relatedness, competence and autonomy as simultaneous basic needs. As competence and safety grow, the degree of independent responsibility grows with them. Belonging and a voice stand independently of that, fixed from day one.
What a stage actually measures

The stage that applies from day one
Until 20 August 2026, the count began at stage one. Every child was automatically considered Ankommender from day one, even before the criteria of that stage were actually met. The choice was unclean: either weaken the criteria until they held true on day one, or grant a child a stage it did not yet carry. Either option would have been dishonest.
The solution is an additional stage below, one that nobody has to earn. The former stage one is now called Gefährte and is worked toward. Belonging, breaks, movement, attention and a voice in the morning circle now hang on the new stage zero, and therefore on nothing a child first has to achieve. Everything above that describes growing self-leadership.
