Is belonging something you have to earn?

The six stages and their objects

Every stage carries a name, a guiding value from the Greek and a symbol. Each one comes with a real object, put into a child’s hand.

From stage one on, every step up carries a promise in the first person that a child speaks aloud. Stage two reads: I keep what I set out to do. The handbook names its model openly, the scouts gave every stage its own promise.

• Stage 0, Ankommender, the arriving one, xenia for hospitality, symbol a candle. The line: you are here, and you belong. You do nothing to earn it.
• Stage 1, Gefährte, the companion, philia for community, symbol a lantern. The candle from stage zero goes in.
• Stage 2, Verlässlicher, the reliable one, ethos for character, symbol an anchor. The line: you keep your promises and work unwatched.
• Stage 3, Gestalter, the maker, arete for excellence, symbol a quill.
• Stage 4, Mitverantwortlicher, co-responsible, phronesis for judgment, symbol a compass.
• Stage 5, Selbstführender, self-leading, eleutheria for freedom, symbol a ship wheel.

The decision of 20 August 2026

Until that day the count began at stage one. Every child counted as Ankommender from day one, before the criteria were met. That left an unclean choice: weaken the criteria until they hold on day one, or grant a stage a child does not yet carry. Then came the sentence that named it.

They are not there yet when they arrive. They cannot automatically be an Ankommender.

An observation from three school years came with it: some children never met the rules of the old stage one. A stage you are given and then do not carry for years describes nothing. So a stage moved in below. The former stage one is called Gefährte now and is worked toward. Belonging, breaks, movement, attention and a voice in the morning circle hang on stage zero.

This is completely neutral and not negative, everyone is an arriving one. No black mark, no bad point.

I know the other side of this stage from my own experience. I was the outsider in my class for eight years, until at some point I told myself I would not accept it any longer. Nobody gave me belonging back then, I had to fight for it myself. That is exactly why stage zero matters so much to me today. No child should have to fight first just to belong.

What a stage measures

A stage describes observed self-leadership, reliability, responsibility and consideration. It rewards neither obedience nor academic performance. The distinction rests on the self-determination theory of Deci and Ryan, set out in Self-Determination Theory and the Facilitation of Intrinsic Motivation from 2000. Relatedness, competence and autonomy are simultaneous basic needs there. Autonomy does not begin further up. Only the degree of independent responsibility grows with competence and safety.

Every stage system has the same weak spot. Visible rewards can crowd out the joy in a thing, because at some point a child does it for the reward. Research calls that the overjustification effect, and the handbook names it as its own risk: if a child is only considerate to reach the next stage, we have lost. So the maturity track stays private. No noticeboard, no ranking, no comparison. Its only place is the Monday conversation, 18 minutes per child per week.

What a [[meilenstein|milestone]] is

For the way from one stage to the next the school says milestone. The wording came from the team, with a reason that gets the tone right: promotion criterion sounds like corporate hierarchy. A milestone is no duty and no claim. It says what makes a conversation about the next stage worth having. When a mentor sees a milestone, it becomes a point for Monday.

The axiom catalogue in the pedagogical foundation, written along first-principles, holds the line even more sharply: basic autonomy, belonging, attention, breaks, movement and voice are every child’s due. Parents ask here, and the handbook answers with clear limits: no ranking, no points for school duties, no automatic unlocking of rights. The school calls its frame a triad of relationship, meaning and self-determination, and more stands under Paideia for schools and the education question. Testing objections has its own note: When is criticism a gift and when is it just fear?

• From zero to one: you leave your place tidy and arrive on time in the morning circle.
• From one to two: you have taken responsibility for a room several times, and done it well.
• From two to three: you carry your own thing forward over a longer stretch, unprompted.
• From three to four: you move your important project forward on your own, up to the next confirmed expo.
• From four to five: you can take on a voluntary mentorship or an area for a limited time.
