# What is an uncomfortable feeling trying to tell you?

**An uncomfortable feeling is a message. It reports that something is off and could be better, and almost always names the first step too. Fear says: prepare. Frustration says: become more flexible. Overwhelm says: get clear. Read the message, act on it, and you can let the feeling go. Push it away and it comes back larger.**

*The mental model: every uncomfortable feeling points in a direction, and every direction carries a message.*

I explained this in January 2016 across fifteen videos, recorded in three days, with one camera and no script. I have never withdrawn the model. It sits underneath two notes in this garden without my having named it there.

## The four strategies

Everyone has a strategy for uncomfortable feelings, and almost nobody chose theirs. You train it in early and then use it for decades. In the second episode I laid out four of them. Three are detours. The fourth reads the message.

### Four ways of meeting an uncomfortable feeling

- Denial. You say it is not that bad, and small things pile up until together they knock you over.
- Drama. You tell the feeling bigger than it is and amplify it without changing anything.
- Avoidance. You stay away from every situation where the feeling might show up.
- Understanding and applying. You clarify what you feel, read the message, act, and let go afterwards.

> negative feelings are here to serve us, they are here to help us
>
> Momo in the video "Four strategies for dealing with emotions", January 2016

Why the three detours are so comfortable is explained by an old story in the series. A dog lies on a nail and whines. Why does he not get up? It hurts him enough to whine, but not enough to move. Most uncomfortable feelings sit there for years.

## Where the compass comes from

The compass has an origin I want to name: Tony Robbins. As a teenager I was a big fan. His emotional triad of posture, focus and language helped me enormously through my first heartbreak, and in January 2016 it turned into my own series, my first attempt in front of a camera, recorded at the place of a friend who helped me with it. Today I see it more soberly. Much of his work is unscientific, and the live events I attended consisted largely of selling. In my experience the audiobooks were the more valuable part. The compass still holds, because it applies one simple principle: read a feeling as a signal and give it an action.

The scene behind that stands in the manuscript. For years I was in love with a girl and never got an answer. After I heard the triad in an audiobook I tried it out and set myself an ultimatum. I ask for a meeting, and the answer decides how this goes on. Beforehand I wrote down which posture I would take, which questions I would ask myself and which meaning I would choose if the answer was no. I counted down from three and asked. The no came as a message while I sat in the car with my family on the way to the swimming pool.

I said nothing. At the pool I went under and screamed under water. Then the three steps came back to me and I went through them in order. First physiology: push off the wall and swim. Then focus: ask what is good about this, and notice that the thing was finally settled. Then meaning: decide that this is not an ending but a beginning. One length of the pool later I was on the other side, inside as well as out. That is the whole triad in a single example, in the water, in a few minutes.

## The chapter in the manuscript

A year after the video series I wrote a book. I started three days before my twenty first birthday and finished it two nights later. It is called "Unzerstörbares Mojo", indestructible mojo, and it never came out. One chapter carries the same name as the series: the emotion compass. It sorts the ways of meeting a feeling differently from the videos, and the sorting is more precise.

### Four ways from the chapter

- Avoiding. You stay away from every feeling that might turn uncomfortable, and live narrowly for it.
- Overlaying. You put a nicer feeling on top and tell yourself it is not that bad.
- Making it your identity. The feeling becomes part of who you are and brings attention and sympathy.
- Learning and driving. You read what the feeling reports and use its energy for the change.

Underneath it stands a model the series does not have. Every uncomfortable feeling reports the same thing: your rule and your situation have moved apart. You hold rules about what has to be true before you allow yourself to be content, and that is fine, because part of that is your moral compass. When the situation misses a rule, a feeling shows up. Two paths follow. If the cause sits outside your control, check the rule. Anyone who hangs their mood on the weather has built a rule they cannot serve. If the cause sits within your reach, act. Loneliness wants people around you, anger wants something set right, fear wants preparation.

> Negative emotions do not pile up. What piles up are the causes of the negative emotions.
>
> Momo in the manuscript "Unzerstörbares Mojo", early 2017, translated from German

The same chapter holds the place where I correct myself for the first time. Back then I thought indestructible mojo meant not feeling bad feelings. For years I laid nicer ones over them, because that was faster and felt like strength. That is the second of the four ways, and I took it for a skill. In the manuscript I write that I barely understood this for a long time, and that there are no bad emotions. Getting that correction into my daily life took several more years.

## The compass and its ten directions

The image is a compass. Every uncomfortable feeling points in a direction, and every direction has a meaning. I called them action signals, because they do not only report, they demand something. The path is always the same: clarify what you actually feel, read the message, choose an action, begin. Whether the action works right away matters less. The moment you move, the signal has done its job.

For each direction I wrote the message in one sentence. The compass below turns that into a tool: pick a feeling, read the message, take the first step.

*An interactive tool sits here on the page: https://zukunftbilden.eu/en/denken/was-will-ein-gefuehl-sagen*

### Ten feelings and their message

- Unease. Something could be better. Write down what, and do the most important item.
- Fear. Prepare. Clarify which pain you expect, and prepare for it, in skill or in your head.
- Grief. An expectation has broken. Write it down and check whether your rule was fair.
- Anger. A rule has been broken. Check first whether you misread it, then ask kindly.
- Frustration. The path is wrong, the goal is not. Collect more paths, pick one, start.
- Disappointment. Something fell below your minimum. Learn from it, set a new goal, lower nothing.
- Regret. You broke your own highest standard. Own it, prevent it in future, then put it down.
- Inadequacy. You could be more. Take the people ahead of you as models.
- Overwhelm. Get clear. Write everything down, number it, master the smallest circle first.
- Loneliness. You need a connection. Name which kind, and reach out to one person.

Inadequacy is what took me into the harder tennis group back then, where I lost almost every match. I learned faster there than ever before. The feeling was a hint about which group I belonged in.

> Destroy these monsters of negative feelings while they are still small.
>
> Momo in the video "Four strategies for dealing with emotions", January 2016

One example from the series I must credit to myself. Two days before the oral school leaving exams I watched films for a whole day. I did not want to feel the fear. By the evening the fear was still there, joined by disappointment in myself, and I studied into the night.

> There are no failures, there are only learning experiences.

## What I leave out today

Three things I would do differently. I used numbers I could not back up. I sold the series at the end, and the selling presses itself into individual sentences. And I acted as though you can name your own feeling with certainty if you look inward long enough. That is untrue, see [Why is looking inward not enough?](https://zukunftbilden.eu/en/denken/warum-selbstbeobachtung-taeuscht) Which makes the written half of the compass the important half: write down which expectation broke, date it, read it again later.

## Where the model stands today

The figure of thought stayed. A signal gets read instead of pushed away. It sits inside the test every piece of criticism runs through here: if it holds up from first principles, it gets built in, if it is only fear, it gets an honest answer. That stands in [When is criticism a gift?](https://zukunftbilden.eu/en/denken/kritik-als-geschenk) It also sits inside the school. At paideia every child has had 18 plus 2 minutes of conversation with a mentor every week since 11 August 2026. A feeling needs a place and a time, otherwise it gets declared a disturbance. And nobody has to earn the lowest maturity stage, so that a child can say how they are at all: [Is belonging something you have to earn?](https://zukunftbilden.eu/en/denken/zugehoerigkeit-und-verantwortung)

## The garden at the end of the series

The last episode switches the image. Uncomfortable feelings are weeds you dig out at the root. After that no flowers grow on their own. For those I drew a triangle: movement, focus and language. Change one of them on purpose and the other two follow. Emotion, as it stands there, is energy in motion. The closing exercise is the earliest version of something I said differently ten years later, in the speech about [three keys](https://zukunftbilden.eu/en/drei-schluessel): first your values, then the North Star, then what you simply want to keep doing yourself.

## The whole series

Fifteen episodes, recorded in January 2016, my first attempt in front of a camera, at the place of a friend who helped me with it. The camera was poor, the sentences had exclamation marks, and I was twenty. I put them here anyway, complete and free, because they are the beginning of everything the tool above holds. Whoever watches them sees me learning. Whoever only needs the message per feeling has it above.

### Emotionskompass (Januar und August 2016)

The whole series from 2016, fifteen episodes, just as I recorded them back then. The tool above is today’s version, the videos are the beginning.

#### Getting Started

Four videos that introduce the course and explain the four typical strategies for handling uncomfortable feelings.

1. [Introduction](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3RfCgq3ybCg) (4 min) · You get a first overview of who this course on the ten action signals is for and what it covers.
2. [Welcome and Overview](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2qhNTfosE0) (6 min) · You learn how the course is structured and how to use it later as a reference whenever a specific feeling catches you off guard.
3. [Four Strategies for Handling Emotions](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zARYyxccaok) (14 min) · You spot which of the four typical strategies, denial, dramatizing, avoidance, or understanding and applying, you tend to use yourself.
4. [Uncomfortable Feelings](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sp81vvu3HPc) (7 min) · Through the story of the dog and the nail you see why an uncomfortable feeling is really nudging you toward one concrete improvement.

#### The Nine Feelings

Nine videos, each on one difficult feeling, with the message behind it and steps you can apply right away.

1. [Fear](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rK6Cd2SSRvc) (13 min) · You learn that fear is asking you to prepare, and practice shrinking the feared pain by getting clear and mentally rehearsing it.
2. [Grief](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cmwh-Nuo11M) (11 min) · You work out which expectation or rule just got broken, and practice adjusting your perception or your own rules on purpose.
3. [Anger](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DlPrZYkcKLI) (13 min) · You work through five steps to check whether a broken rule was actually fair, and learn to redirect the pent-up energy somewhere useful.
4. [Frustration](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-ovjwSHT-w) (12 min) · You notice that frustration usually comes from repeating the same approach, and brainstorm many new paths toward your goal.
5. [Disappointment](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=McsclmtkOzQ) (12 min) · You learn to pull the lesson out of a disappointing situation and immediately set a new goal that is not smaller than before.
6. [Regret](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxg3YuNs33M) (9 min) · You practice accepting a broken personal standard, setting up a system against repeating it, and then genuinely letting the regret go.
7. [Feelings of Inadequacy](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxLWG6ZpMJU) (9 min) · You practice seeing people who seem ahead of you as role models rather than as proof of your own shortcomings.
8. [Feelings of Overload](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Huh3SBFJJ-s) (10 min) · Using the image of a circle you master before widening it, you break an overwhelming situation down into one doable first step.
9. [Feelings of Loneliness](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VFl8FD1cTg) (6 min) · You figure out exactly what kind of connection you are actually missing, and practice reaching out to people because of it.

#### Closing

A summary of the method and a bonus video on deliberately building positive feelings.

1. [Closing Words and Next Step](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1RS2QUKYCQo) (6 min) · You recap the three steps, clarity, understanding, letting go, once more and think about your own next step.
2. [Bonus, Building Power Emotions](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l7GVLBoJ5jw) (14 min) · You learn the three building blocks of any emotion, movement, focus and language, and design a morning routine around your ten desired feelings.

## Margin notes

- **Randnotiz** What surprises me most today: how much writing this series asks for. Almost every instruction starts with a blank sheet. Ten years later I think the sheet is the actual trick.

## How this note grew

- 2026-09-03: Deepened with the manuscript "Unzerstörbares Mojo" from early 2017: the four ways, the model of rule against situation, and the scene the triad comes from.
- 2026-09-03: Planted from the video series "Emotions Kompass", January 2016.
